2011 NCAA FBS College Football Preview: 25 Players To Watch For # 22
Tuesday, May 17, 2011
Last Season, the Texas Longhorns finished the season 5-7 and missed a bowl game for the first time under head coach Mack Brown, who has been at UT since 1997-98. In 2009, Texas was undefeated in the regular season, and lost to #1 Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game. Coming into Brown's 14th season as head coach this season, he has options at the quarterback position which might cause him a problem that many coaches would love to have. Two highly regarded QB's who can make plays and win games.
Garrett Gilbert, who started last year and relieved Colt McCoy in the National Title game after McCoy got knocked out of the game in the first quarter, has shown good attributes and mechanics at the position, but he has been very inconsistent in passing numbers and winning ball games. Last winter, the Longhorns recruited and signed the # 6 overall prospect, Connor Wood, and he was enrolled and learning the offense by spring practice. Wood is coming off of a redshirt year, and is looking to crack the starting lineup. He looked the best of all 3 quarterbacks in the spring game, ( The 3rd QB happens to be McCoy's younger brother, Case) and Coach Brown will not hesitate to give Wood a chance at the starting position if the offense sputters under Gilbert. Either way, Gilbert is a junior, and only has this and next year left on his playing eligibility, so getting Wood meaningful reps and game time will be crucial for the near future of University of Texas football.
